Dues at UAW Plants
The UAW will take a portion of your paycheck every month as a fee for its representation. Currently, this comes up to 2.5 hours of work at your hourly rate. The UAW most recently raised dues in 2022, and uses a national convention vote process to decide when to increase dues.
A portion of this money is sent to the UAW’s national headquarters. Theoretically, the money is used to represent you. However, some $86 million in dues payments were used by the union to compensate union officers and staff members in 2023. Over 500 UAW staffers and officers make six-figure salaries. The union additionally spends millions of dollars on lawyers, political advocacy, entertainment, and travel.
Overall spending by the UAW has doubled over the past decade, going from $214 million in 2013 to over $470 million last year. Meanwhile, UAW membership has reached its lowest point since the great recession.
